Beschreibung:

18 handwritten pages. 13x7.5 cm. (5¼x3 in.) Printed wrappers. Miners' letter from Negbaur & Co. Handwritten letter from an Emmett [?] Hyde in Sacramento to his brother, dated March 29, 1853. Includes commentary about the Railroad company digging a ditch on his brother's property renting a house, with a strong bent against renting to anyone Irish or anyone with livestock, the price of pork ($46/barrel) and beef ($40/barrel) and the merits of shipping dried peaches around "the Horn." Mr. Hyde notes a locally occurring murder in which three men shot another man who'd turned state's evidence. "I shall see them hanged if nothing prevents. I think one of the three will have his sentence commuted but two will have to stretch [?] hemp." He then goes on to detail what sounds like a California super bloom - fields full of wildflowers, some with the "appearance of belonging to the tulip family," likely California poppies, which he wants to harvest seeds from to send along "for I think [it] one of the most beautiful flowers in the country." Also notable is a light admonishing of his brother for withdrawing too much money from a local bank and concerns about what might happen to him as a result. "You had best get your life insured so that Margaret won't be left destitute."
