Beschreibung:

Mulga Fields, near Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, Australia Black opal is defined as a natural solid opal which is opaque when viewed from the top of the stone and which has a play-of-color against a dark background graded as at least #3 Black on the Lightning Ridge Miners Association Tone Scale. The black must come from the opal itself, not from another material such as the potch on the back or from the ironstone, in the case of boulder opal. Very few opals commercially available on the market qualify for this designation—the most prestigious amongst opals—and an indication of the highest value. The present oval cabochon of natural black opal is distinguished by its true black body color—it is not merely gray as so many are which call themselves black. Visible from the side is the thick layer of gem material—a “seam of opal”, with characteristic and desirable black potch to the reverse. With its large “flagstone” pattern play-of-color consisting of predominantly brilliant and vivid royal blue and green with flashes of orange there can be no finer example of classic material from this region. Weighing approximately 10.10 carats and measuring 22.2 x 14.4 x 4.2mm
