Beschreibung:

MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791). AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT SKETCH OF THE BEGINNING OF AN EARLY INCOMPLETE UNPUBLISHED FUGUE AND TRIO, black ink, 2 pages, the Trio comprising 12 bars and crossed through diagonally, the Fugue 31 bars on four systems of two staves bearing an autograph inscription by Georg von Nissen, 300 x 221mm., loose, (some rubbing, central horizontal crease) The trio is the earlier of the two pieces and by the characteristics of the autograph can be dated to before 1770. The work is likely to have been drafted in 1765-6, when the young Mozart was in London. This dating is consistent with the paper which is likely to be English, circa 1760. The autograph manuscript of the trio and fugue has been unknown until now, although a copy was published by Hellmut Fredehofer, Mozartiana im Musikaliennachlass von Ferdinand Bischoff, Mozart Jahrbuch , 1965-6, p.30. This page was crossed through by Mozart at the same time that he added the characteristic brackets on the side, presumably at the time he used the early leaf to add the fugue study. The handwriting of the fugue is later and can be dated to 1771-3. The Nissen inscription reads Zu beliebingen Gebrauch . We are indebted to Professor Wolfgang Plath for his assistance in identifying this manuscript.
