MORRIS, William (1834-96)-- Catalogue of a Portion of the Valuable Collection of Manuscripts, Early Printed Books, &c. of the Late William Morris . London: Dryden Press for Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 1898. 8° (254 x 187mm). Original printed wrappers (lightly marked and chipped, cracking and neat repairs on spine). WILLIAM MORRIS' SALE CATALOGUE, NEATLY PRICED THROUGHOUT. Morris' library was sold for £18,000 in April 1897 to Richard Bennett an 'eccentric Manchester collector ... who had just been spending enormous sums at the Ashburnham sale ... Bennett only collected manuscripts and incunabula. He was a conscientious objector to large folios and never bought a copy of Caxton's Golden Legend because it exceeded in height his limit of thirteen inches. What he did not retain of the William Morris library he re-sold at Sotheby's on 5 December 1898, including of course all the large early folios in the library' (S. De Ricci English Collectors of Books and Manuscripts , London: 1930, pp. 172-173); this sale realised nearly £11,000 from some 1,215 lots. This catalogue has been carefully annotated throughout, with buyers' names, prices realised, and the totals for each page and (on the rear free endpaper), totals for each day and the whole sale.
