A $4,000 promissory note from Nicholson to Morris, endorsed by Morris on verso; [AND WITH:] Notary's 31 March 1794 Protest, noting Nicholson's default. 1p., folio, clean separation at fold AN URGENT PLEA TO HIS BUSINESS PARTNER, Morris tells Nicholson "I want to settle my depending matters with Mr. Wm. Cramond. Have you, or can you & will you, adjust with him immediately the Security for the bills you sold him so that I may find myself in capacity to negotiate effectively with him." Nicholson and Morris were partners in several speculative schemes and ventures. In 1794--the same year that Nicholson was impeached and forced to resign as Pennsylvania comptroller general --he and Morris formed the Asylum Company, designed to sell land to French emigres fleeing the guillotine. They also formed a consortium for buying property in the District of Columbia. But their grandest venture, the North American Land Company, was formed in 1795 along with James Greenleaf. The three men parlayed their political and business connections into acquiring a vast real estate empire of some six million acres spread across the south and the Ohio Valley. Their holdings were precariously leveraged with debt, and their empire came crashing down (as evidenced by the accompanying 31 March 1797 Protest evincing Nicholson's failure to pay his 1794 promissory note) with Morris thrown into debtor's prison in 1798, and Nicholson joining him there the following year, where he languished until his death. Together 3 items . (3)
