Elaborate engraved frontispiece of St. Francis by Domenico Falcini (altered in manuscript, see below), letterpress dedication and preface, 22 engraved plates by Jacopo Ligozzi and Raphael Sciaminossi, each printed on one side only and facing letterpress explanations within typographic borders; plate A is printed on 3 leaves, plate D on two leaves, five engraved overslips on four plates: [F], [G],[ I], [R](2 overslips). 17th-century vellum (a few stains). Provenance : acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1989. FIRST EDITION, PROOF STATE OF THE ENGRAVED PLATES BEFORE LETTERS, and with the title-page altered in manuscript to correct the placement of the stigmata on St. Francis' left side. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ITALIAN BAROQUE BOOKS: The remarkable plates by Jacopo Ligozzi and Raphael Sciaminossi illustrate St. Francis's experiences on Mount Alvernia, in the Tuscan Apennines, and the buildings of the monastic community established there. As the preface explains, Moroni set out for Mt. Alvernia in 1608 accompanied by Jacopo Ligozzi formerly a pupil of Paolo Veronese Upon their return to Florence, seven drawings were engraved by another local artist, Raphael Sciaminossi, and signed with his monogram; a portrait frontispiece was engraved by Domenico Falcini of Siena; and fifteen plates were produced by an unnamed engraver, possibly Ligozzi himself. Moroni wrote a dedicatory letter to his friend Arcangelo, dated at Florence 1st June 1612, an address to the reader and keys for the plates, each page of which the printer set within an elaborate border of typographical elements.
