MONTECALERIO, Joannis à. Chorographica descriptio provinciarum, et conventuum fratrum minorum S. Francisci Capucinorum. Rome: 1643. Oblong 2° (263 x 365mm). Engraved additional title, folding general map of Europe (tears and repairs at folds), 4 general maps of Italy, Spain, France and Germany, 46 maps of 'provinces', each of the maps with accompanying leaf of letterpress text, each printed within decorative engraved border. (First of the Italian provincial maps torn with slight loss at lower margin, old light dampstaining to 10 of the 'province' maps, first text leaf torn along lower plate mark.) 18th-century speckled sheep gilt, covers blocked with unidentified armorial, spine gilt, lettered in one compartment (small neat repairs to extremities). A RARE atlas showing the locations of the various houses of the Franciscan order, with statistical details of the numbers of the congregations on the accompanying text. The province maps include 23 of Italy; 5 of Spain; 11 of France and 7 of Germany. The present edition precedes the Turin edition, the latter often mistakenly listed as the first edition. Some of the text leaves have numbers provided in manuscript, occasionally on slips pasted over existing letterpress numbers, implying that there was an even earlier issue. A later issue by Malaterta was published in Milan in 1712. Cf. Cremonini 28 (1649 Turin edition).
