This lot features a collection of photographs and manuscripts relating to Ed Phillips, his wife Marie Kempton Phillips, and their daughter Jean. According to his unpublished autobiography (present in this lot), in 1882 Ed traveled to Terry, Montana as a young man to work on cattle ranches. In 1900 he joined the cast of Buffalo Bill's Wild West, and in 1902 he married Marie Kempton, whose family owned a large cattle ranch in the area adjacent to that of photographer Evelyn Cameron and she joined him on tour with the show. Both performers traveled to London for the four-month run at the Olympia Building in 1902-03. Soon after, the two returned to Montana to work on the ranch and start a family. In 1919 Phillips moved to Los Angeles to work with such cowboy stars as Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Harry Carey, Fred Thompson William S. Hart, and Hoot Gibson, among others. This remarkable collection of manuscripts, photographs and ephemera traces the Phillips' family's path from working cowboy to performer on stage and screen. Highlights include: Approximately 366 negatives, c.1904, images taken by Marie Kempton Phillips, depicting life on the Montana ranch, including novelty steer riding and rodeo scenes, The Wild Horse Race and other performances, branding, cattle, wagon trains, horse-breaking (by Ed Phillips), and more. Autograph Manuscript of Marie Phillips, 60 pp recto and verso, 4to, Terry, Montana and Brooklyn, NY, January 1 to December 31, 1904, being a daily journal of life that year, housed in cloth journal, pages heavily thumbed, covers waterstained, worn. A detailed account of a year in the life of a ranch. Autograph Letter Signed of Ed Phillips, 8 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoining leaves) on board the U.S.M.S. St. Louis, December 10, 1902, describing the voyage to England with the cast of Buffalo Bill's Wild West; together with 6 pp ms diary kept on board. A raucous look at the onboard shenanigans of the cowboys. Autograph Manuscript of Ed Phillips, 35 pp recto and verso, 4to, [Los Angeles?], n.d., being a draft of his autobiography, with typed transcript and miscellaneous fragments possibly prepared for publication, wear and creasing throughout. A fascinating account of Phillips' life as a real and onscreen cowboy. Present also are several period photographs of Kempton family members, many with L.A. Huffman studios stamps, albums of Ed Phillips' press clippings, a small notebook recording Ed Phillips movie work for Columbia Studis, 1939-1942, and a 1939 diary of daughter Jean Phillips. See illustration.
