MONRO, Alexander, secundus (1733-1817). Observations on the structure and functions of the nervous system . Edinburgh: William Creech and Joseph Johnson, 1783. 2 o (505 x 305 mm). 50 engraved plates, drawn by Thomas Donaldson, Alexander Battoni and A. Fyfe, and engraved by Donaldson, Battoni and G. Cameron. Uncut. Original blue boards with vellum corners, rebacked in calf (edges worn). FIRST EDITION. A study of the interior and exterior anatomy of the brain. Monro described - though not entirely correctly - the intraventricular foramen between the lateral and third ventricles (later named after the author). He also concluded that nerve function was not dependent on electricity. The most important work of the greatest member of the Monro medical dynasty. Garrison-Morton 1385; Norman 1538.
