MONARDES, Nicolas. Joyfull Newes Out of the New-found Worlde. Wherein are declared, the rare and singular vertues of divers Herbs, Trees, Plantes, Oyles & Stones, with their applications, as well to the use of Phisicke, as of Chirurgery...Also the portrature of the said Hearbs...Wherunto are added three other bookes treating of the Bezaar Stone, the herb Escuerconera, the properties of Iron and Steele in Medicine, and the benefit of Snow. Four parts in one volume, 4to (187 x 140 mm). Roman and black letter types, general and one sectional title-page with woodcut typographical border, 12 woodcuts in the text (three full-page) illustrating herbs and plants, including the preliminary leaf with large signature mark “A”. (Small marginal wormtrack near gutter of signatures i-z, some pale mostly marginal dampstaining at end.) Contemporary limp vellum, later manuscript spine label, remnants of ties (soiling and some edgewear, front free endpaper worn at edges); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : Henry Byng (1573-1635), possibly the MP from Grantchester, Cambridgeshire and Gray’s Inn, London (contemporary signatures on title and each part title); John Kannell (early signature on title); Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (bookplate). In addition to describing the uses and cultivation of quinine, sassafrass, cassava, rhubarb, ginger, Monardes "was the first physician to write of the vegetable poison curare, and his lengthy description of an even more famous American plant introduced to Europe the name 'tabaco' and 'nicotain'...(Norman). The additional treatises on the medical properties of the bezoar stone, iron and steel and snow appeared first in English in the 1580 edition.
