Third edition in English, translated by John Frampton (fl. 1577-1596) from several important Spanish treatises by Monardes (ca. 1493-1588), a physician of Seville. In addition to describing the uses and cultivation of quinine, sassafrass, cassava, rhubarb, ginger, Monardes "was the first physician to write of the vegetable poison curare, and his lengthy description of an even more famous American plant introduced to Europe the name 'tabaco' and 'nicotain'...(Norman). The additional treatises on the medical properties of the bezoar stone, iron and steel and snow appeared first in English in the 1580 edition.
