Beschreibung:

Modo di far la Cabala Bianca etc, in Latin and Italian, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [?Venice, first quarter 18th century] 280 x 200mm and smaller. 56 leaves, modern pagination on rectos, omitting some leaves, followed here (one later leaf missing pp.100-101), irregular number of lines written in black ink in an early 18th-century Italian hand, with tables, diagrams and calculations, a few leaves added in a 19th-century hand, mostly irregular (worn edges to a few leaves, pp.7-8 a letter with remains of seal). Early 18th-century calf (restored). PROVENANCE: The bulk of the texts was written in the early 18th century: they forecast events from various dates from 1710, among them the winners of the Venetian Lottery on 23 August 1724, p.115. Subsequently, perhaps when the binding was restored, some 19th-century leaves were added, relating more to Rome and Tuscany, one dated 1832 (pp.3-4). CONTENT: Modo di far la cabala bianca p.1; cabalistic diagram p.5; sonnet by Abbate Mariani, originally sent as a letter to Avvocato Mergrida (?), consigliere, Ministerio di Passavia, Rome, pp.7-8; Tractatus de scientia numerica pp.9-19; De litteris assumendis ex numeris collectis pp.19-20; De regulis diserfrandi pp.21-28; tables of letters, numbers and dates pp.29-43, with pp.31-43 additions; Regola numerica simpatica pp.45-54; Regole numeriche pp.55bis-56bis; Chiave della cabala numerica simpatica pp.57-59; Regole della piramadale pp.61-68; associations of numbers pp.69-71; added numerical leaf p.73; tables p.75; Cabala numerica with diagram of the Orologio trionfante pp.77-83; Cabala di Salomone with a pasted over correction p.93, pp.85-99; ciphers pp.103-113; forecast of the Venetian lottery p.115. This collection of cabalistic texts is in an avowedly learned mixture of Italian and Latin, with many complex tables, although its ends are often worldly advantage. It was apparently still in use in the 19th century.
