Illustrated with 280 reproductions of pen, brush and ink drawings by Rockwell Kent (4to) original black cloth stamped decoratively in silver, top edges stained black, pages unopened and untrimmed in third volume, housed in the publisher's aluminum slipcase. First Rockwell Kent Illustrated Edition. One of 1000 sets printed under the supervision of William A. Kittredge for R. R. Donnelley & Sons. Melville's classic novel of the sea with the magnificent renderings by Rockwell Kent Includes the often-lacking original publisher's aluminum slipcase. Considered by many to be the greatest illustrated book of the 20th century. This copy inscribed in the first volume "To Hazel Koppstein this volume is inscribed by Rockwell Kent". Each volume bears the Rockwell Kent designed bookplate of Hazel & Richard Harwell, depicting two giraffes, embraced in a kiss, initialed in the plate, R.K. (Later Bookplates, p.24, printed there with the giraffes spotted in a red color, the giraffes are not spotted on the actual plate.) Rockwellkentiana p. 62. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor wear to case; volume spines a bit sunned, small pieces of old tape affixed to pastedown endpapers, holding supplied later acetate jackets(worn), a near fine copy with excellent provenance.
