MITFORD, John] 'Alfred Burton'. The Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy; a poem, in four cantos: with plates by Rowlandson, from the author's designs. By Alfred Burton. London: W.Wilson for W.Simpkin and R.Marshall, 1818. 8° (222 x 136mm.). 16 hand-coloured aquatint plates after Thomas Rowlandson (one plate with neatly repaired tear, one text leaf repaired). Modern red morocco gilt, t.e.g., by Zaehnsdorf. FIRST EDITION. Abbey Life 330 (under Burton); Tooley 406 (under Rowlandson). [ANON] 'John Mitford'. The Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy. A poem in four cantos. With notes. By John Mitford, Esq. R.N. London: Hamblin for Sherwood, Neely and Jones [and others], 1819. 8° (226 x 145mm.). 20 hand-coloured aquatint plates by C.Williams (some spotting and old dampstaining, a few leaves with repairs to margins). Later mottled calf gilt, t.e.g., by Riviere & Son. FIRST EDITION. An imitation of the first work which is generally listed as the second edition, but the only direct similarity seems to be between the titles: the plates, text, printers and publishers are different. The publisher of this work presumably hoped to cash-in on Mitford's name and the name of his work. Abbey Life 340 (under Mitford); Tooley 331 (under Mitford). [MITFORD, John]. My Cousin in the Army: or, Johnny Newcome on the peace establishment. A poem. By a staff officer. London: Shackell and Arrowsmith for J.Johnston, 1822. 8° (233 x 137mm.). 16 hand-coloured aquatint plates by C.Williams, I.R.Cruikshank and others. Modern red morocco gilt, g.e., by Riviere & Son. FIRST EDITION. Abbey Life 370 (under Mitford); Tooley 166 (under Cruikshank). (3)
