Beschreibung:

MITCHELL, MARGARET. Typed letter signed ("Margaret Mitchell Marsh") to Martha Angley. Atlanta, 25 April 1936. 1½ pages, small folio, single-spaced, a few autograph corrections, with original envelope hand-addressed by Mitchell, both letter and envelope laminated. "I HAVE A PASSION FOR MYSTERY STORIES AND THE CHEAPER THE BETTER." A lengthy letter in which Mitchell responds to questions from Angley, giving personal and biographical details about herself for the "term paper." She writes: "...About 'Societies, clubs, honors etc' -- I'm not much of a 'jiner'...As to published writings, except for the stuff in the Sunday Magazine of the Atlanta Journal and a few in the daily Journal , I haven't any published writings. I have very few of my articles which appeared in the Journal ...The articles I have are so dreadful that my toes curl in my shoes when I look at them. I keep them around to mortify my spirit when ever I get puffed up. The only ones I ever wrote that I took pride in were my historical ones..." Mitchell discusses her "peculiarities" ("inability to do anything mathematical," "hatred of the telephone") and notes: "...Among other peculiarities I do not like to drive fast in automobiles..." (Mitchell died in 1949 after being struck by a speeding car while crossing the ÿtreet). "As for hbbbies," she adds, "I haven't any...If I have a hobby, it's listening to people talk and, of course, reading. I have a passion for mystery stories and the cheaper the better. Stories in which fuses blow out, clod hands clutch in the dark, women scream and secret panels engulf detectives are my meat. And any books on neurology, psychiatry or abnormal psychology appeal to me...I am looking forward to seeing you and expect you to call me when you come to town. Due to the adoption of my book by the Book-of-the-Month Club the publication date has been postponed so I won't be having any teas, thank God, on the weekend when you are here in town."
