Leaves x8-[y]6, containing the Canon, plus the conjugate x1, PRINTED ON VELLUM. 39-41 lines and headline, double column. Printed in red and black. Full-page woodcut on title-page of the arms of the city and bishopric of Salzburg between two columns, at top swirling foliage enclosing a small Nativity at center flanked by the heavenly host at left and the Annunciation at right, signed "DS" (cf. Nagler 1369); full-page Crucifixion cut opening the Canon (x8v), large historiated initial with angels opening "Te igitur" on facing page, small Agnus Dei cut on [y]4v; first text page (a1r) with historiated woodcut initial composed of cornucopiae and a grotesque head, praying monk at center, and floriated partial border ornament with peacock; ALL WOODCUTS WITH FULL CONTEMPORARY COLORING, THE CANON CUTS ILLUMINATED, the Te Igitur initial and the halos of Christ, Mary and John in burnished gold, the Crucifixion cut within a mauve frame surrounded by ink bezants and small flourishes. Woodcut 6-line floriated Lombard initials from two different sets, smaller Lombard initials, all initials printed in red, red-printed printer's device at end. Printed music consisting of German neumes in black on 4-line staves in red (k4v-l1v and t4r-v8r). (Slight soiling to first leaf, minor fraying or small marginal tears to first and last leaves, faint minor marginal dampstaining in last few leaves, tear to z5, slash to blank lower margins of l9-m3.) Binding : contemporary Augsburg binding (Kyriss shop 88, Jagd-Rolle IV, active ca. 1498-1514) of blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, sides panelled with floral rolls (Kyriss 3 = Schwenke-Sammlung Ranke 189, Kyriss 4 = Schwenke-Sammlung Blattwerkornament 51), a small roll with a dragon and human figure, a hunting roll (Kyriss 5 = Schwenke-Sammlung Jagd 15) and a ropework roll, Misale lettered at top, spine with Kopfstempel tools (Kyriss 1), chased brass center- and cornerpiece bosses, two fore-edge catches (lacking clasps), vellum index tabs including 5 at lower edge marking the Canon leaves, quire liners to first and last quires cut from a 12th-century manuscript on vellum with oratorical neumes and a fragment of an illuminated initial (head and tail of spine worn away, a few scrapes); folding cloth case. Provenance : [Lathrop Harper 1973] A FINE, COMPLETE COPY, in a contemporary Augsburg binding, of one of 13 recorded liturgical works printed at Basel and Venice between 1502 and 1524 for the printer Johann Oswalt, a leading publisher of liturgical works at Augsburg. The Basel printer Jakob Wolff of Pforzheim (active from 1492 until shortly before his death in 1519) specialized in liturgical printing and produced numerous editions for other publishers.
