Lot of 10. One complete pipe, used. Bowl is rounded square, approx. 2.5 in. Spots along 3 faces where something was applied or intended to be applied. Top edge of bowl with splits. Wood from a root probably intended to be hollowed out as a pipe. Period label over what would have been a bowl, mostly illeg. other than "Roanoke Island, 1861." Two formed leather "elbows," that would be cases for pipes. One is a plain elbow, with satin lining on one side and velveteen on the other. Max. diam. 5 in. The second is 5 in. long and 3 in. high. Inside is "Nat Wales / Major 35 Mass Regt. from C.E.S." Nathaniel Wales enlisted in September 1861 as a clerk in the 24th MA Infy. He was promoted to 1st Lieut. of the 32nd MA Infy, then a month later of the 35th MA Infy. He was promoted to Major in April 1863. He received brevets to Lieut. Col. and Colonel. There is a matchbox of thermoplastic with an eagle on a shield on front. Ebony carving with hand holding a stem. Approx. 7 x 4.25 in. Another ebony hand holding a cylinder. Approx. 2 x 3.5 in. Woman's leg in ebony, with garter and high heel. Approx. 3.25 in. Hand holding a clay pipe made from a large nail. 2 in. high x 2.25 in. wide (pipe length).
