MIRACLE OF THE ADULTEROUS WOMAN'S REPENTENCE, miniature by an assistant of Lieven van Lathem
MIRACLE OF THE ADULTEROUS WOMAN'S REPENTENCE, miniature by an assistant of Lieven van Lathem 130 x 178 mm. Verso with 14 lines corresponding to de Laborde p.155; from the second folio missing after f.12 in BnF, ms fr.9199 (slight paint losses upper left, small ?scratch across upper left, slight smudge on altar cloth). On the right, the wife of an adulterous knight implores the Virgin to punish his mistress; the Virgin refuses because the woman always salutes any image of her by saying Ave Maria . Subsequently the wife meets the woman in the road and tells her why the Virgin is refusing to punish her, seen on the left. The woman is so ashamed that she immediately repents and has nothing more to do with the knight. Throughout, the knight's wife is distinguished as lady, dame , from the woman, femme , a distinction followed in their dress: the lady wears the tall headdress of a noblewoman and has a lady attendant on her, while the woman has a low headdress and the skirt of her robe practically belted up. The text on the verso relates the Virgin's words and the beginning of the exchange between the lady and the woman, with Ave Maria picked out in red.
