Minton Majolica Pierced 'Crystal Palace Art Union' 'Christmas Dish' Date cypher for 1859 Impressed script mark, incised 1 and 0, recorded as shape no. 864 The center with a Tudor rose issuing mistletoe, the reticulated holly berry wreath border divided by four panels of putti at holiday pursuits, including capturing a goose, warming hands at a fire, serving a boar's head and raising a glass of mead beside a shield embossed 'Crystal Palace Art Union'. Diameter 15 5/8 inches. Note: In accord with an Act of Parliament and with the support of Prince Albert, The Crystal Palace Art Union was founded in 1858. This dish was therefore amongst the earliest products commissioned.
