Miniature French Armillary Sphere . Unsigned, late 18th Century. A miniature armillary sphere, pasteboard and card, outer diameter 3 inches (75mm.), overall height in case 4½ inches (115mm.). The main axis with a miniature globe, diameter ¾ inch (17mm.), the globe made up of 12 hand-coloured engraved gores, with two card planets set on brass arms set around, the whole set in the centre of the horizontal ecliptic circle crossed by the solstice and equinox colures, each with varnished paper graduations, the ecliptic circle with engraved card band of calendar and zodiac scales, hour and geographical circles at each pole. The armillary sphere set in a horizon bar and mounted in its original turned fruitwood case, painted black with floral gilt decoration (cup neatly repaired). A fine and rare French pocket armillary sphere, mounted for display. The style and quality of the construction is very reminiscent of the work of Charles François Delamarche.
