Miniature dos-à-dos binding New Testament and Psalms, 1633-5 MINIATURE BOOK – The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. London: Robert Barker 1633 [Bound with:] The Whole Booke of Psalmes. London: Company of Stationers, 1635. Miniature embroidered binding, in Fortuny silk pouch. Miniature copies of the New Testament and Psalter were often bound together dos-à-dos ("back to back") in this way in the 17th century, frequently for female owners. "Intimate objects, they invite attention to every detail, attracting ornamentation, sumptuous leathers, sequins and embroidery on elegant silks" (Edison). This tiny devotional object comes with a blue Fortuny silk carrying pouch. STC (2nd ed.) 2943 and 2661.5; see Edison, Miniature Books: 4,000 Years of Tiny Treasures (2007). Two works in one volume, 24º (108 x 48mm). First title with woodcut border, woodcut initials and other typographical ornaments; second title with device, musical notations. Contemporary embroidered dos-à-dos binding worked in silver thread with pink and green rosettes; custom morocco box, blue Fortuny silk pouch (frayed).
