Mills Novelty Co. 5 cent slot machine ''The Owl'' Print Late 19th/early 20th century, Mills Novelty Co., Chicago, IL, the floor-standing metal-mounted and hand-painted rectangular wooden case surmounted by a foliate-adorned and molded patinated metal coin head marked ''Chicago'' and ''Pat. Nov.8.98,'' above a circular glazed aperture housing the lithographed owl-adorned wheel, over an outset disc music box faced by a second circular glazed aperture, raised overall on foliate cast metal bracket feet, with keys, including cranks: 66'' H x 31'' W x 19.5'' D, Provenance: Purchased circa 1982 from Trilco, Arcadia CA; Estate, Pasadena, CA. Condition: Overall good condition; winds, runs and plays. Scattered spots of mildew and rust to interior commensurate with age. Present disc player and six-way Dewey/Chicago head likely later replacements. Music box and disc marked for the Regina Company. Rear right foot with an approximately 1?? x 1?? loss to upper scroll element; an approximately .5?? x .5?? corresponding gouge to underlying timber. Case previously refinished. With restorations and repairs completed in 1982 by Gary Taplin of Free Play Quality Restorations & Sales, Arcadia, CA.
