In 1870, Millet and his family fled Barbizon and returned to his familial homeland near Greville. He here writes to his gallerist Durand-Ruel offering his famous "Cliffs of Greville," a painting which he notes he had been obsessing over for a long time, and that he hopes will create something good out of the sad occasion. Paul Durand-Ruel revolutionized the dealer-artist relationship, through his absolute dedication, both artistically and financially. He supported Millet for many years, while he worked tirelessly to bring recognition to the Barbizon school.
