MILLER, Arthur (1915-2005). Death of a Salesman: Certain private Conversations In Two Acts and requiem . TYPESCRIPT INSCRIBED AND SIGNED: "The mansuscript before certain technical revisions were made. To my knowledge, one other exists. Arthur Miller." 167 pages, 4to, typed in black and red ink, blue wrappers of MCA Management Ltd., 444 Madison Ave . "YOU WERE NEVER ANYTHING BUT A HARD-WORKING DRUMMER WHO LANDED IN THE ASH CAN LIKE ALL THE REST OF THEM" AN EARLY, ANNOTATED TYPESCRIPT OF ARGUABLY THE GREATEST AMERICAN PLAY OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. Willy Loman, the grandiose salesman whose dreams (or delusions) of fame and success, are cruelly stripped away, is one of the indelible characters of the American theater. This tragedy of an aging man facing -- and evading -- the squalid truth of his life, and his children's struggle to live within his lies, made a tremendous impact on audiences and critics when it premiered on Broadway on 10 February 1949. It won the Tony, the Drama Critics Circle, and the Pulitzer. It has rarely been out of the repertoires of American and even international theaters. Miller himself would direct productions in China and Sweden. The lead role--the American King Lear --has always attracted the greatest stage and screen stars and often marks the high-point of their careers, from Lee J. Cobb in the original production, to George C. Scott, Dustin Hoffman, Brian Dennehy and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the five subsequent revivals. This typescript precedes the 1949 first edition by Viking, and was evidently used in the production process as Miller's notes on Happy's character suggest: "His disapproval of Biff, his Beau-deal, should puzzle, bewilder & dishearten Happy" (I:19). MCA Management served as Miller's representative for over 40 years. ONLY ONE OTHER TYPESCRIPT OF DEATH OF A SALESMAN HAS APPEARED AT AUCTION IN THE PAST 40 YEARS, Bonhams New York, Dec 15, 2008, lot 2126. [ With ]: MILLER, Mary. Document signed, 26 May 1952. Corporate by-laws for Neighborhood Films, Inc. 13 pages, 4to . (2)
