MARK OF FREDERICK ELKINGTON LONDON, 1871
MILITARY INTEREST:- A VICTORIAN SILVER REGIMENTAL PRIZE PEG TANKARD TO THE ROYAL SCOTS GREYS (2ND. DRAGOONS), MARK OF FREDERICK ELKINGTON LONDON, 1871, Cylindrical on three ball & claw feet, the handle terminating in a heart motif, the thumbpiece modelled as the captured French eagle taken from Napoleon's 45th Infantry Regiment at Waterloo in 1815, with the battle honour "Waterloo" below, the cover inscribed "Subalterns Challenge Cup presented by Captain F.Lamb Philp and Captain W.Connel Black 1870, "Scots Greys" " , the front engraved with regimental badge & motto scroll above "Won by Mr. C.W. Neale's G.G. Robingray (Owner) 1876" , the sides embossed with three thistle sprays, further names of winners between 1870 & 1875 in small letters inscribed around side just below rim, gilt interior fitted with 5 pegs, interior of cover inscribed "A Subaltern's Challenge Cup presented by Captains Philp & Black. Scots Greys. With optional Sweepstakesof 2 sovs.each. The cup to remain in the Mess until won twice by the same horse and owner; For bona fide hunters, the property of Subalterns in the Scots Greys. A winner of any flat race, hurdle race, or steeplechase (not regimental) disqualified. Any horse that has been in a training stable during the twelve weeks previous to the races disqualified. To be ridden by Subalterns in the Regiment. 12 stone each. 7 lbs. allowed to riders who have never ridden in a flat race, hurdle race,or steeplechase. Any horse not ridden by his owner to carry 5 lb. extra about two miles over the Steeplechase course. An officer having won once as a Subaltern allowed to enter the following year, although promoted." , 11½ in. high (29 cm.), 50 oz.
