WWI group of three to 2nd Lieutenant S.T. Fowler, Royal Naval Air Service Later Royal Air Force who played a vital role in the sinking of SMS Konigsberg on 11 July 1915, 1914-15 Star (F.4655 S.T. Fowler. A.M.1. R.N.A.S.), British War and Victory Medals with M.I.D. oakleaves (F.4655 S.T. Fowler. P.O.M. R.N.A.S.), extremely fine, mounted for wear and presented in a period frame, glazed together with an archive relating to the recipients military service and engineering career including Temporary Commission certificate dated 13 October 1919 (2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force), a WWI watercolour of Short Seaplane No.1087 with Fowler and a Flight Lieutenant, the mount inscribed 'SHORT SEAPLANE N.1087. Grain to Plymouth. June 5th. 1917. Flt. Lieut V.R. Scriven. Petty Officer S.T. Fowler.', artist monogram lower right, 19.5 x28cm, framed size 32 x 39cm with details of this trip to verso, pocket diary kept by the recipient for the period of January to June 1916 with approx. 50 pages inscribed in pencil including diagrams another for 1915 (Siemens Brothers issue), pocket notebooks for 1917 and 1918, Soldiers' Pay Book for Use on Active Service dated 1915, manuscript list of Signal Signs in envelope addressed to Mr Fowler R.N.A.S., G.R. Army Book with memoirs written by the recipient in later life, a photograph album compiled by the recipient for service in East Africa, containing approx. 130 snap shot size black and white photograph, many captioned including J.T. Cull Station Commander RNAS, 14.5 x 8.5cm, Caudron GIII aircraft, Maktau, Tauga Campaign, Lieut Watkins Pilot with Major Keen Observer, aerial reconnaissance over Taveta Camp (taken by Gull with his own camera), a photograph of Miss Anne Louise Fowler (recipients sister), newspapers, magazines including The Air and Sea, January 1917 etc 2nd Lieutenant Sidney Thomas Fowler (1871-1970) was born in Bexley, Kent, prior to his military service Fowler worked at Bexley Power Station but in May 1915 he joined the Royal Naval Air Service where he played a small part in the sinking of SMS Konigsberg on 11 July 1915 in East Africa where he carried out work on one of the seaplanes which took part in the sinking of Konigsberg. The photograph album included in this lot has photographs of many officers and friends who Fowler served with including Flight Commander Cull who was the pilot of one of the spotter planes involved in the attack and which crashed after it was hit by enemy fire. Both Cull and his Observer survived after being picked up by a small boat, an extensive eyewitness account of this action written by Fowler is included in the lot. (a carton)
