Engraved coat-of-arms, one engraved folding plate by FRANCISCO SILVERIO after JUAN DE ROJAS, and 34 inserted leaves with engraved vignettes above letterpress sonnets (folding plate linen-backed). 19th-century calf, "WMS" monogram stamped in blind on front cover, coat-of-arms of William Stirling Maxwell stamped in blind on back cover, spine gilt-lettered (some minor rubbing). William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878) (binding, bookplate). On 14 January 1724, Philip V, King of Spain abdicated the Spanish throne to his young son, who became LOUIS I, King of Spain. King Louis would rule for only 7 months before succumbing to smallpox on 31 August of the same year. Funeral services were held throughout the Spanish Kingdom, and in this work Villerías describes the obsequies held for the young king in Mexico City. He provides the inscriptions etched on the elaborate catafalque designed by Juan de Rojas and illustrated in the folding plate, the text of the sermon preached by FATHER JOSé DE LANCIEGO Y EGUILAZ, the Latin oration delivered by CARLOS BERMúDEZ DE CASTRO, and also includes the numerous sonnets and poems written in memory of Louis.
