Beschreibung:

31.875" curved single-edged blade with wide, 25.5" stopped fuller, 37" in overall length. 5.25" hilt with single branch brass guard and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Leather wrapped grooved wood grip with 17 wraps of twisted copper wire. Obverse ricasso marked "US/NWP" with reverse ricasso marked in three lines "N.P. AMES/CABOTVILLE/1848". Pommel cap inspected with an "NWP" (Nahum W Patch) and "WAT" (William Anderson Thornton). Obverse knuckle bow stamped "CHA". Includes a lap-seamed iron scabbard inspected with a "JH" on the drag with a pair of iron suspension rings, no throat and a later period set of Stuart saber hangers. The blade shows a significant flaw, about 3" in length, roughly 18" from the hilt, in the center of the fuller. The flaw is visible from both sides of the blade. A solid example of a fairly early production Ames US Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber with a Mexican War production date. Condition: Good. Blade with a mottled gray patina showing substantial scattered age discoloration, some minor surface roughness and some lightly scattered pitting. Blade with some old tool marks and some minor nicks along the edge, and with a tiny chip at the tip. Leather wrap in very nice condition with wire intact. Brass hilt with an uncleaned mellow golden patina. Missing leather throat washer. Scabbard with a similar patina and scattered dings and dents. Stuart hanger with crazing and in about good condition.
