Engraved title, engraved coat-of-arms of Duke d'Espernon by ALEXANDRE VALLEÉ; folding map and plan of Metz, folding plate and 15 full-page engravings (one double-page). 18th-century vellum. Provenance : École Royale Militaire (inkstamps on several leaves); bookplate with motto "Ils s'instruisent pour vaincre." The entry of le bon roi Henri HENRI IV (1553-1610), King of France, into Metz took place in March 1603. The coat of arms on the arch on E1r (those of France, the kingdom of Navarre, Henry IV, and the Dauphin) are reminders of the struggles over the royal succession which plunged France into chaos for years. Henry of Navarre was finally acknowledged in 1593 as the rightful heir to the crown. According to the text, the four figures in the arch represent "the innumerable virtues of the king." Although he was a very popular monarch, in May of 1610 he was assasinated by a fanatic who had persuaded himself that Henry was a traitor to the Catholic cause.
