Dr. Max Faget (1921-2004) was co-designer of the Mercury spacecraft and was given a United States patent for the vehicle’s design. Illustrated is a ¼ scale view of a mounting ring and cables for the Mercury heat shield. The ring assisted attachment of an expandable landing bag to cushion the spacecraft during an ocean splashdown or possible unplanned hard surface landing.
