Méo-Camuzet, Echézeaux les Rouges du Bas 1997
6 magnums per lot
ECHEZEAUX LES ROUGES DU BAS Echézeaux is one of the largest grand crus in Burgundy. Within the vineyard there are a number of demarcated lieux dits, within which, the terroir varies greatly. The one acre plot of Echézeaux Les Rouges du Bas that Méo-Camuzet farms comes from the very top of the slope. This strip is at the very top of Les Rouges du Bas and the altitude perhaps explains the aromatic freshness often found in this wine, even though its east/south-east orientation also influences its early maturity. The nature of the soil changes with the altitude: lighter and lighter as you get higher. The original planting dates from the end of the 40s, but about one quarter of these were renewed several years ago. The grapes are small, particularly at the top of the slope, they ripen quickly, and a high sugar level combined with excellent acidity can often be observed; this produces wines of extraordinary intensity. Méo-Camuzet only bottle one release of Echézeaux and that is Echézeaux Les Rouges du Bas. The vast majority of the bottles that feature in this sale are labeled as Les Rouges du Bas, but several of the lots that have been bottled at the domaine as Echézeaux; there is no difference between the wines, this distinction is purely a labeling issue, the wine under both labels is the same. Méo-Camuzet, Echézeaux les Rouges du Bas 1997 Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits Half bottles with bin soiling 6 magnums per lot
