MENCKEN, H. L. Group of 10 short typed letters signed from Mencken, mostly to Ralph F. Colin (one to Louis Untermeyer and one to "Mr. Baldwin"). Various places (mostly Baltimore), 1927-43. Together 10 pages, mostly oblong 8vo, mostly on printed stationary; mostly with original envelopes. An interesting collection of letters written to his friend Colin discussing various matters including their mutual friend Untermeyer, work, health, etc. 19 January 1943: "...The news that Louis Untermeyer is in the United States really surprises me. I was under the impression that he was serving with the Marines in the Solomon Islands. How so healthy and saucy a young fellow has managed to escape the draft I can't make out..." 2 March [1929]: "Dear Louis [Untermeyer]: "I suppose I must do it, though it gravels me to hymn pedagogues...It is swell stuff...We should print an author's note about you. Have you ever printed anything before? Let me have your birthplace, original name, place of education, etc., and a list of your jobs. If you read, mention the books...Give me news of your coming in advance. The beer here is kolossal, and there is even sound wine..." (10)
