Captain Stanley was a survivor of the Palmetto Regiment in the Mexican American War and later served in the Confederate Army. A resident of Darlington Court House, he enlisted in 1846. In these memoirs, he provides considerable first-hand details of battles throughout the Mexican campaign. Especially notable is his account of an encounter with a young Robert E. Lee, later to become the Commanding General for the Confederate Army in the American Civil War. He claims that Lee, as one of the army engineers, led the regiment across the Pedigral, which is a mass of melted lava filled which chasms in Mexico. Stanley goes on to tout Captain Lee claiming that “I further believe […] Robert E. Lee, then captain, could have taken Santa Anna’s army of 30,000 men and checked the advance of [General] Scott with the men he had.” Probably produced in a miniscule quantity, and therefore now quite rare.
