Beschreibung:

3 volumes in 2. v, 481 plus errata page; 824, 87 plus a 10-page catalog of Priestley's works. With observations on Priestley's writings by Thomas Cooper and Rev. William Christie. (8vo) 23.2x14 cm (9¼x5½"), bound by Bayntun in period three-quarter calf with buckram boards, morocco spine labels, spines decorated and lettered in gilt, raised bands; patterned endpapers. Posthumous collection of Priestley's memoirs handsomely bound with a number of appendices and commentaries on the work with additions by his son. Joseph Priestley (1733–1804) was a British natural philosopher, dissenting clergyman, political theorist, theologian, and educator. Today he is best remembered for his isolation of "dephlogisticated air" (oxygen), but his determination to defend phlogiston theory left him isolated within the scientific community. His outspoken support of the French Revolution aroused public and governmental suspicion; he was eventually forced to flee in 1791, first to London and then to the United States after a mob burned down his home and church. He spent the last ten years of his life living in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
