Condition : some browning and usual scattered foxing; spine faded, cloth very slightly worn at extremities, but a tight copy. Provenance : Estelle Doheny (bookplate on front pastedown). the doheny copy of the first american edition , with advertisements dated October, 1849. The first American edition of this early work appeared two months after the first English. It is generally acknowledged that the number of ads within the book is generally not conclusive enough to posit a priority of printing (as long as all other points match; as here). BAL 13660.
