Built by Groves and Guttridge in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, boat number 482. Constructed of double diagonal mahogany, bronze fastened on rock elm and oak. Bright varnished above the waterline and blue anti-foul below water line. Powered by a 1944 Perkins S6M (M standing for marine i.e. cast and machined bronze parts) 6 cylinder four stroke marine diesel, of 451 cu.in.(7.35litres) capacity and delivering 100 bhp at 2000 rpm. Fitted with a Meadows 2:1 reduction gearbox and a recent Bowman heat exchanger. Believed to have been fitted in the 1960's. the original build notes indicate the engine was signed off for dispatch at Woolwich Dockyard boat store in May 1944 and is understood to have been sold unused. General arrangement: Foredeck of laid planking, with chrome spotlight and twin horns, small windscreen to front cockpit with helm position to port, instrument console and floor gear shift. Fitted with a generously cushioned bench seat, having storage beneath and a lockable cuddy below the fore deck. The mid-ships section has a pair of hatch covers hinging for access to the engine bay. A rear passenger cockpit, with cushioned bench seating, aft deck with cleats and ensign staff. The search and navigation lights and all deck fittings are original and complete. In addition original equipment such as the bronze bilge pump and polished chrome Pyrene fire extinguisher are still installed (but supplemented by more modern concealed arrangements) Medusa has a Hubert Scott Payne inspired semi-planing hull with hard chine, having the lines of a one-half scale MTB (PT) boat, and has been linked to the draftsman of Miss England, Fred Cooper, and the British Power Boat Company – the Harmsworth Trophy contenders. Scott Payne also worked alongside R.J.Mitchel, starting the Supermarine Company in 1917 and going on to win the Schneider Trophy. This boat is a rare and beautiful example of a fast launch designed to take owners and crew in the Solent out to their yachts, and was built towards the end of the Golden era of big yacht racing. Medusa therefore represents a very British contemporary of classic Chris Craft and Riva launches. The Groves and Guttridge Vectis works in Cowes had a reputation for constructing strong and reliable wooden craft for the Admiralty, RNLI and private customers; Seaplane tugs, Torpedo recovery craft, lifeboats and yachts all left the slipways until the Company closed in the 1970s. Medusa gained a rosette at the Thames Traditional Boat Rally in 2007 for the general standard of restoration and mechanical installation. She has had only 3 owners since the early 1960's, she is presented in a well sorted and looked after condition and comes with a purpose built road trailer, top and side covers with cockpit supports plus an inventory of useful equipment and spares.
