MEDIEVAL ENAMELLED GILT-BRONZE PRINCE EDWARD II HERALDIC HORSE HARNESS PENDANT 1284-1308 AD A carinated T-shaped panel with hinge to the lower edge and two attachment holes; heater shield with red enamelled field and three gold lions, blue bar with three descenders (denoting the eldest son during his father's lifetime) overall blazoned 'gules three lions passant gardant or, a lable azure overall'. 12 grams, 44mm (1 3/4"). Fine condition. Provenance Found near Reigate, Surrey, UK, in 1995. Footnotes Edward II was born in 1284 at Caernarfon, the son of King Edward I Longshanks. Following the death of his elder brother, Alfonso of Ponthieu, Edward became the heir apparent. He ruled from 1307 until he was forced from power in 1327 following the revolt of Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer. Escaping to Wales, Edward was captured and forced to relinquish the throne to his son, Edward III. He died at Berkeley Castle the same year.
