M.S.M., London Gazette, 1 January, 1918: 'in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the field during the present war.' Private W. Sharpe was one of only three members of the West Riding Regiment to be entitled to the clasp for Relief of Ladysmith, his combination of clasps being unique to the regiment. Captain A.M. Whittaker and 3573 Private G. Longbottom also received the clasp, all three serving with the 1st battalion.
