Medals to the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment from the Collection of Mr Donald Hall A Boer War and Great War group of five to Sergeant Major W.A. Sharpe who was one of three members of the West Riding Regiment present at the Relief of Ladysmith QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902, 6 clasps, Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing's Nek (4902 Pte., W. Riding Regt.); KING'S SOUTH AFRICA, 2 clasps (4701 Serjt., W. Riding Regt.); BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS, M.I.D. (87203 AWO. Cl. 1., R.E.); MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL, G.V.R. (CS. Mjr., 204/F. Coy., R.E.) light contact marks, otherwise very fine(5) Footnote M.I.D., London Gazette, 18 May, 1917 (Haig's Despatch dated 9 April 1917). M.S.M., London Gazette, 1 January, 1918: 'in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the field during the present war.' Private W. Sharpe was one of only three members of the West Riding Regiment to be entitled to the clasp for Relief of Ladysmith, his combination of clasps being unique to the regiment. Captain A.M. Whittaker and 3573 Private G. Longbottom also received the clasp, all three serving with the 1st battalion.
