Lady Hawkins in January 1942 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; War Medal 1939-45, together with original Admiralty condolence slip in the name of ‘Gordon Cyril Bushby’, extremely fine (3) £60-80 Footnote Gordon Cyril Bushby was killed in action on 19 January 1942, while serving in the S.S. Lady Hawkins, on which date she was torpedoed by the U-66 in the North Atlantic - only one boat was got away, and 250 lives were lost through drowning or exposure. In addition to several “mentions” and commendations, the ship’s Chief Officer, Percy Kelly was awarded the M.B.E. and Lloyd’s Bravery Medal on the same occasion. The son of Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Bushby of Worthing, Sussex, he was 18 years of age and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
