Medals for Services at Sea from the Collection of the Late Oliver Stirling Lee Family group: Three: Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class J. Buckland, Royal Navy Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, no clasp (Chf. E.R.A. 2 Cl., H.M.S. Woodlark); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Eng. Rm. Artr., H.M.S. Lord Warden), impressed naming; Khedive’s Star 1884-86, light contact marks and edge nicks, otherwise good very fine or better Three: Victualling Chief Petty Officer R. S. Buckland, Royal Navy British War and Victory Medals (340175 V.C.P.O., R.N.); Italian Messina Earthquake Medal 1908, silver, occasional edge bruising, good very fine (6) £250-300 Footnote James Buckland was born at Southampton, Hampshire in February 1849 and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer in September 1870. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1880, he went on to witness active service aboard H.M.S. Woodlark off Egypt in the operations of 1884, and was still in service when he died of pneumonia at Southsea in January 1891. Ralph Sydney Buckland was born at Portsea, Hampshire in February 1879, the son of James Buckland, then serving as an Engine Room Artificer in the armoured ship Lord Warden. While further research is required to establish the nature of his wartime career 1914-18, his entitlement to the Messina Earthquake Medal is verified on the published roll, for services as a Ship’s Steward aboard the Lancaster.
