Hart, 1855. 3 volumes, 8° (263 x 172 mm). 120 hand-colored lithographic plates by J.T. Bowen, most after Charles Bird King (Occasional light spotting or soiling, a few leaves with mostly marginal dampstain at end of vol.I.) Original publisher's brown blind-stamped morocco, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, the others decorated in blind, all edges gilt (rebacked, a few corners renewed, some light wear). Provenance : Mrs. W. Baker (ownership signature dated Aug. 28, 1855). Early octavo edition, first published in this reduced format in 1850, following the folio edition of 1836-1844. The plates, which Howes describes as "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed," are from King's portraits in the Indian Gallery, Department of War, Washington, which were all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. The octavo edition contained an additional plate of "Red Bird," used as the frontispiece to volume II, as well as additions to the biographies. Howes M-129; Sabin 43411.
