Maximilian Büsser and Friends (MB&F) was formed in 2005, after Maximilian Büsser concluded a successful and transformative seven years as Managing Director of Harry Winston Rare Timepieces, developing the highly acclaimed Opus series. Espousing the entrepreneurial spirit, Büsser sought to harness the most creative minds in the independent horological profession to produce uniquely, artistic timepieces. The present watch, the MB&F LM1 Xia Hang, represents a creative collaboration between MB&F and the Chinese artist Xia Hang featured at the M.A.D. Gallery, an international gallery dedicated to Mechanical Art Devices. The original LM1 debuted in 2012 and was designed by two renowned independent watchmakers, Jean-François-Mojon and Kari Voutilainen. The LM1 incorporates 19th century pocket watch features in a wonderfully, three-dimensional movement, such as a suspended oscillating balance wheel, dual time indicators that can be set independently and a vertical power reserve indication. The current lot, the MB&F Xia Hang was produced in a limited series of 12 pieces each, in red and white gold. The superb design of the present watch in red gold, showcases a special power reserve indication; a miniaturised, aluminium alien-like figure designed by highly-acclaimed Chinese sculptor Xia Hang. Nicknamed "Comma Man" by the artist, the little figure stands upright when the watch is fully wound and slowly slumps over as the power diminishes. Playfulness is an attribute valued and shared by both Maximilian Büsser and Xia Hang in all their creations, both horological and artistic. It is a pleasure for the wearer to behold the contemporary twist on traditional watchmaking embodied by the MB&F Xia Hang wristwatch.
