Beschreibung:

MAZA, Giovanni Battista [ Veneto . Venice]: Francesco Bertelli for Giovanni Battista Maza, [second half of the 16th century] n.d. Engraved hydrographic map of the Veneto on two median sheets joined, overall 425 x 670mm (engraving 358 x 502mm), including the principal towns and rivers of the Veneto and the surrounding lands and regions, including the Po, the Brenta, the Piove, and the Livenza, compass rose and scalebar. (Trimmed to plate mark, one sheet neatly reinforced on verso, some very occasional light spotting.) VERY RARE and very fine dark early impression of this important map of the Veneto river systems. It is one of the most interesting examples of a 'stampa d'occasione', whose importance is related to topographic and hydrographic studies of Polesine region. Almagià considered the drawing of the Po delta 'remarkable'. Giovanni Battista Maza was active in Venice, and engraved several maps, mostly for Donato Rasciotti, in the late 16th century, as well as a large globe for the cosmographer Giuseppe Roseccio (c. 1530-1620). The map also includes schematic plans of Ferrara, Padua, Treviso, and Conegliano. Watermark bisected orb with sphere. Not in Tooley.
