Visit to the Falls of Niagara in 1800 .
London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, 1826. Large octavo (10 ¼ x 7 inches, 260x180mm). Engraved mounted India proof additional title, 8 engraved mounted India proof plates, all by J. Cousen after Maude. extra-illustrated with a lithographed portrait of the author by Madeley, a hand-colored lithographed view of Moor House, and the author's armorial bookplate mounted at the end of the preface. [BOUND WITH:] Additional Notes [caption title]. 8 separately-printed pages, inserted before the index. Printed after 1833. [AND WITH:] Additional Notes [caption title]. 16 separately-printed pages, printed in June 1839 or later, laid in. Printed after October 1840. Original presentation red morocco gilt, covers with outer panels of fillets in gilt and blind, a.e.g. Condition: Very light foxing to the portrait; spine a bit faded, else only minor rubbing to the binding. Provenance : Miss Turner (Author's presentation inscription on the front free endpaper). extra-illustrated, large-paper presentation copy of a scarce travel journal to niagara falls. Maude's journal begins on 21 June 1800 in New York and describes his travels via Albany to Niagara, Montreal, Lake Champlain, the Hudson River, and his return via Albany to his starting point on 10 October of the same year. The text prints almost verbatim his daily journal covering the journey, accurately displaying his fascination with the country and its people. He writes in the Preface: “Gray was right in asserting, that a word written on the spot, is worth a cartload of recollections.” Sabin describes the work: “Three hundred copies only printed, of which fifty were on large paper with proof-plates, rl. 8vo, four copies on India paper, and four on Whatman's thick ribbed paper. Some copies contain additional notes (pp. 16), which were printed after the book had been published.” This, therefore, appears to be one of only four copies on india paper . In addition, it contains an earlier version of the Additional Notes not identified by bibliographers. Dow I:115; Howes M429; Lande 1969; Lowndes p.1518; Sabin 46913; TPL 744.
