Folio, 311 x 195 mm., eighteenth-century half calf, rebacked; title soiled, short wormtrack on title and first few leaves (affecting one letter on title and several words on the following leaves in the Epistola), a 2-inch piece missing on upper margin of Qq4 (affecting 3 lines of text and pagination), penultimate leaf (Qq5) laid down to repair tears and chips (headline affected slightly), some mostly marginal dampstaining and soiling, some minor marginal worming. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION of the Discorsi , preceded only by the Latin translation (published also by Valgrisi in 1554) with the same woodcuts. This fine series of woodcuts by Giorgio Liberale is one of the great suites of sixteenth-century botanical woodcuts. "Blocks from the 1554 set were still in use at Venice in 1712 in the Italian text edition of Niccolò Pezzana. Reduced copies of this first Valgrisi set were made for Gabriel Cotier's Lyons edition of Antoine DuPinet's French translation of Mattioli, 1561, and are mentioned in the privilege granted to Cotier in 1560" (Mortimer, p. 429).
