Dedicated to the Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand I, who had summoned Mattioli to Prague to treat his son, the Archduke Maximilian, it contains letters mostly on botanical subjects to and from eminent scientists of the day, such as Aldrovandi, Gesner, Faloppio, and others.
