(Title lightly soiled, soiling of text margins becoming heavy in final quires, quires zz to end affected by damp at gutter, Ll1 torn with significant loss and repaired, Mm5-Nn6 with extensive marginal repairs, some lesser tears.) Contemporary blind-panelled pigskin over wood boards retaining metal claps (extremities worn, heavy scuffing to lower cover, one clasp slightly defective); modern red half calf box. Provenance : M. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION (and the first in Latin) of Pietro Andrea Mattioli’s commentary on Dioscorides’ Materia medica , the first work of medical botany. Mattioli also described a hundred new plants, taking into account the medical and even the non-medical botany of his own time. Most of the plants and animals illustrated were drawn from life by Liberale of Udine, though some pictures had been brought from Damascus, Cairo and Alexandria by Odoardo Polacco.
