Mathematics. MUNSTER, Sebastian. Rudimenta Mathematica. Haec in duos digeruntur libros, quorum prior geometriae tradit principia seu prima elementa, una cum rerum et variarum figurarum dimensionibus. Posterior vero omnigenum Horologiorum docet delineationes. Basileae, in officina Henrichi Petri, 1551. Folio, 300x195; Later vellum over boards, yapp edges, title manuscript on spine, new endpapers. Pages: 10, 242, (2), Errata on recto of last leaf with illustration meant for page 145, collation: a6 (-a6 a blank), A-E6, F4, G-T6, V4, X6. Romanic type in one column. A large title woodcut as well as 178 partly figurative woodcuts and diagrams in the text, some full-page. Folding plate at the end headed: Typus universalis horologiorum muralium. Some of the woodcuts made by Hans Holbein the Younger. Errata leaf with woodcut illustrations on recto and Woodcut printer's device at the verso. Copy with widespread uniform browning.
First and only edition of this extremely rare mathematics book. Work extensively illustrated with 178 woodcuts, among them sundials and zodiacs by Hans Holbein the Younger. The first part relates to practical geometry, ballistics and surveying, the second is a treatise on horology. Münster outlines the principles of geometry, as an introduction to a more substantial treatise on dialling, and includes range-finding applications in his account of triangulation by an instrument. This first and only edition of the 'Rudimenta' was published one year before Sebastian Münster's death. The third Latin edition of the 'Horologiographia', first released in 1531, is added as second part. Four illustrations of sun dials and other instruments in this work (here on pages 113, 211, 215 and 222) as well as 10 of the 12 nice figurative sign of the zodiac are ascribed to Hans Holbein the Younger. The woodcuts on geometry show geometric figures as well as measuring operations on buildings and in landscapes. Specimen with the rare folding plate, often missing. Adams M1939; Bibliotheca Astrologica 844; Burmeister 54; Honeyman V, 2274; Houzeau & Lancaster 11364; Zinner 2022. E.Major: Basler Horologienbücher mit Holzschnitten von H. Holbein d.J. (in: Monatshefte für Kunstwissenschaftler, issue 4/1911, pp.77-81); catalog Holbein exhibition in Basel in 1960, no. 426, 430. The lot is offered with a valid license.
