Kennedy: “Thus, while Peano’s influence among his colleagues at the university may have been decreasing, the schoolteachers still respected and listened to him. It was perhaps this that prompted him to think that his ideas and methods might be introduced into the schools. To this end he extracted from the Formulaire the propositions dealing with arithmetic and elementary algebra, translated the explanatory notes into Italian, and presented the volume for possible use in the secondary schools.”
