French, active early 1780s La Sultane French, active early 1780s La Sultane Signed and dated J.S. 1782 (lr) Red chalk on paper 10 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches (27.3 x 37.5 cm) This drawing replicates a turquerie by JeanÂBaptiste Le Prince (1734Â1781), the original of which is a painting in oil on copper,  dated 1772, now in the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire in Metz. The drawing follows the engraving made after Le Prince's work by Gilles Demarteau (1729Â1776), which shows the composition in reverse. C
Paper toned. Glued to the mount along the upper margin. There are tape stains from a previous mounting in the upper right and upper left. Corners are cut off.
